Law enforcement officials recently executed a search warrant at the local headquarters of the global coffee chain. The operation centers on allegations that the company marketed a beverage using a nickname widely considered offensive to the historical memory of the Gwangju Uprising.

Backlash and Legal Action

The controversy stems from a social media post where Starbucks Korea labeled a drink “Tank Day,” a reference interpreted by many as trivializing the violent suppression of the 1980 pro-democracy movement. Following the online backlash, numerous citizens filed formal complaints accusing the brand of disparaging the victims of the massacre.

Investigators are currently examining internal communications and marketing materials to determine if the publicity campaign constitutes a violation of laws protecting the dignity of the uprising’s history. The company has yet to release a detailed public statement regarding the specific findings of the raid.
