Konami’s legendary Castlevania franchise is making a highly anticipated return to consoles with a new installment titled *Belmont’s Curse*. Slated for release in October, this title aims to reclaim the series’ dominance in the “metroidvania” genre—a category of games named after the hybrid mechanics of *Metroid* and *Castlevania*.
A Return to 2D Roots
Abandoning the 3D experimentation of previous entries like 2014’s *Lords of Shadow 2*, *Belmont’s Curse* returns to the side-scrolling format that defined the series’ golden age. Set twenty-three years after the events of the 1989 classic *Castlevania 3*, the narrative timeline aligns closely with the popular Netflix adaptation.
Players will step into the role of Rose, the daughter of Trevor Belmont, in a story set amidst the dark backdrop of 1499 Paris. Tasked by a desperate bishop with purging the city of a malevolent force, Rose must navigate dangerous environments, including the city’s sewers, wielding a longsword against hordes of demons.
