Lifespan Extension Strategy

Operators of the Sizewell B power plant have secured a significant extension to the facility’s generating life. Originally scheduled for decommissioning in 2035, the nuclear station will now remain operational until 2055.

The decision adds twenty years to the plant’s projected timeline, extending its total service life significantly beyond initial estimates. This extension is viewed as a crucial step in maintaining the UK’s nuclear energy capacity and ensuring energy security.

Located in Suffolk, the pressurised water reactor is the UK’s only operating plant of its specific design. The move to extend its life aligns with broader national goals to bridge the energy gap before new nuclear projects come online.
